Excerpts from court-ordered Psychological Report on Jock Palfreeman - 21st January 2008

During the examination he (Jock) is friendly, with good intentions, polite, shows proper behavior. He is communicative.  He is oriented, he knows the meaning of the expertise and agrees to do it.  He doesn’t have any psychotic tendencies. Emotionally lively, adequate, with sense of humor and irony for situation.  He pays good attention, good possibility, thinks with a normal tempo and structure, correctly and logically.  His memory and intellect are good.  During the interview, he shared with us,

"I graduated high school and went around the world first in Australia.  I was paying for my expenses by working in construction, I’ve worked in a butcher, I’ve worked in the field, I’ve worked on a farm, on a kitchen, in a ship, in a hotel, in a kindergarten (here he smiles).  I have visited England, Austria, France, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria. I come to Bulgaria for the fifth time.  I like it (he smiles). I have friends.  Well, if you want my personal self-estimation, I think I am loyal, honest, hardworking, I’m assertive, I have a good sense of humor and I’m usually in a good mood.  I’m not aggressive, I help them against who an injustice is done.  At school they told me I am the bully of the bullies."

During this psychological investigation conducted on the 21st January, a few tests were done.  The first is a psycho-geometric test, a test for the type of behavior, border personality test and psychological exploration.  The results show that the subject has normal intellectual capacity, overall general knowledge of the world.

Summary of results of psychometric testing

Relatively rich vocabulary, there is no intellectual incapacity to hinder his orientation, his adequate reactions.  In his personality, the subject is more harmonious as construction of personality.  He is socially communicative, easily comes into contact with other people, good communicative abilities and sense of humor, because his model of behavior that was built in his childhood, prominent sense of justice.  When he is convinced that he has to defend a cause and if he thinks that this cause is a priority and is meaningful, he is quite assertive in behavior.

He is quite energetic, quite social, and quite communicative, takes decisions fast and he puts decisions into action immediately.  The subject is capable of paying attention to detail but he also has an overall vision, a general vision of what should be done, what should be achieved.  He works quite well if given clear instructions and procedures which he is capable of following strictly but on the other side when there’s extreme situations he is capable of organizing himself and without losing time and without unnecessary contemplation to just go into solving the problem.

The subject has this desire to support and protect people that according to him have been attacked or humiliated unjustly.  The data for his childhood so far show a person who is really involved in protecting the weaker and those who are more vulnerable than him.  In spite of his young age he is psychologically and socially mature so he is self-sufficient, manages to adapt quickly in situations of strangeness, no matter whether these are new geographical places or new changes in his life.

According to the first test the test of Dootke which is a test for aggressiveness, the subject has levels of physical aggression, oppositional behavior and jealousy and hate of zero, that is, he has no increased physical aggression or tendency to opposition in his behavior.

Vocal aggression: low level.  That he tends to argue, impose opinions but not excessively or just for the sake of arguing.

Aggressive irritability: very low level. He has good intra-psychic control and doesn’t react with heightened irritability in situation of argument or conflict, not with excessive irritability.

Indirect aggression: low level. The subject would not show his aggression in an indirect way.

Aggressive dissatisfaction: very low level. He is not the type that is always grumpy and offended to someone or to the circumstances, is not the type that is always dissatisfied or grumpy.

Guilt after aggression: the subject suffers from going over his behavior which he himself does not think is acceptable.  Indirectly this means that he understands what harm he has caused, he is empathic.  He is warm and cordial.

From the Gisen test, the subject shows normal social resonance, that is the way he presents himself on the social scene is in the norm.  He is not narcissistic, but he also doesn’t suffer complexes and he is present.  His confidence matches his achievements.  It is high enough and balanced.  In his interpersonal relationships he doesn’t have the tendency to dominate. He more has the tendency to serve and to oblige to the others.  He is not in fault in this.  He has a good intra-psychic control of that.  The control over that is not excessive, in the sense that is does not make him stiff or not spontaneous.  He is just normal.  He has got good communicative skills.  He is social but he keeps a good social distance in contact.  He is empathic, warm, cordial, socially oriented, no anesthetic in his actions.  At the moment he shows a degree of depression and in not a very good mood which comes from the situation he is in, but is does not cost him success.

Having analysed all the information in the case file, we corroborated our main report on Jock Palfreemen during the court hearing. Therein we described the results from the conducted psychological and psychiatric examination, as well as the circumstances of the case, which, according to us, are related to the assessment of the psychiatric state of Jock to a high degree.  This analysis leads to the following answers:

  • Jock Palfreeman is harmoniously structured, extroverted, with good contact and communication skills, socially mature, seemingly independent. In his behavior he is spontaneous, but with good intrapsychic control. Warm and cordial with the others, keeping the necessary distance. Not apt to dominate, not aggressive and there’s no data of intensified aggression in difficult everyday situations.

  • The idea of really existing and practically applied social justice is the leading factor in his social orientation. He has a strong desire to fight for social justice. And in concrete situations, in line with his ideas, he has taken part in defending people discriminated because of some specific features – social status, ethnicity, religion, etc.

  • He has grown up in a family environment, dominated by his grandfathers who, in the scientific circles and political life, took active part in defending the need for equal opportunities and justice as the basic human virtue and as practice. This conception forms the foundations of his value system and his social orientation to such an extent that this has often defined his conduct.

  • As far as we looked into all the information in the case file, without claiming that we can fully decide on the question with regard to Jock Palfreeman’s motivation behind his behavior, we assume that in the choice he made in this incriminated behavior the following played a role:

1. The fact that he perceived violence by a group of people over a person of a different ethnic background.

2. The circumstance that heading immediately to help the “weak” one, he failed to achieve the desired effect.

Overall Conclusion

In the testing conducted by us, we find the subject with good intellectual capacity and good knowledge of the world.  There is no data for intellectual deficiency.  Despite some of his characteristic peculiarities and his fight and that some of his actions gives grounds for discussion, we did not find that data for personality disorder.  In this sense, the initial investigation with the psychological test is not ambiguous.

For the maximum security/surety of the testing and the investigation, additional tests were done and the results again show no personal disorder in the character.  The analysis of the data contained in the materials from the preliminary investigation, the medical information and the results of the psychiatric research or survey find no mental illness.
